Clearing Ground That Grows Back

East Texas is the one part of the state where clearing is a maintenance relationship rather than a one time event. The soil is sandy and acid, the rainfall is real, and the understory takes advantage of both. Yaupon, sweetgum, privet and greenbriar fill in under pine and hardwood at a rate that surprises people who have cleared land anywhere west of here. A tract that was open when somebody bought it ten years ago can be impassable now without anyone doing a thing wrong.

That is what makes a mulching head the right tool here most of the time. It takes the understory out in one pass and leaves the pines and the good hardwoods standing, the chip goes back on sandy ground as cover instead of getting piled and burned, and there is nothing to haul off down a county road. Around Cedar Creek Lake there is a second reason: pulling stumps and roots on a slope above the water is how a bank starts moving, so leaving the root mat in place matters more than it does out west. Farther back from the shoreline, where a pad or a drive has to be built, we grub and shape.

What Land Clearing Costs in East Texas

Priced by the machine day, the same everywhere we work. The skid steer mulcher is $3,000 per day with transport included, the high horsepower dedicated mulcher is $4,000 per day plus transport, and dozer or excavator work is $3,000 per day plus transport. One day minimum on every machine. Material over 8 inches always gets the dedicated head. Heavy yaupon under a closed canopy runs at the slower end of a machine pace and open ground at the faster end, so acreage alone will not tell you the number. Two things move the price out here more than they do anywhere else in Texas. Access, because lake lots and timber tracts were not laid out with a lowboy in mind, and how long the ground has been left alone, because on this soil five years and fifteen years look nothing alike.
