Selective means the owner picks the trees, not the machine
Most clearing gets described by a rule. Everything under six inches goes, everything over it stays. This job was not that. The customer walked his own ground and named the trees he wanted out, and everything else was to be left alone.
That changes how the work runs. The operator is not making a pass and taking whatever is in front of the head. He is working tree by tree, backing out of places he would otherwise drive straight through, and checking before he commits to anything. It covers fewer acres in a day than a straight clear, and it is the only way to end up with what somebody pictured when they walked the property.
Getting a fine mulch instead of chunks
How fine the mulch comes out is a function of how many times the material passes under the head. One pass puts a tree on the ground and leaves pieces. Going back over the same ground breaks those pieces down further, and the finer you want it the more time it takes.
This customer wanted a fine finish, so the machine spent time working material back over itself instead of moving straight on to the next tree. That is the difference between ground that reads as cleared and ground that reads as finished. It is worth asking for when the property is something you look at every day, and it is worth skipping when you just need the brush gone.
