Trails only stay trails if you can drive them. On this 5 acre Llano property, the landowner had a network of old trails that had grown completely shut: cedar and brush had taken them over until they were impassable. We brought in our Weiler M860A forestry mulcher, cleared and widened every trail, and then worked across the full property selectively removing cedar. Two days later the whole place is open, accessible, and set up to stay that way for years to come.
Trail Clearing and Cedar Removal in Llano, TX - 5 Acre Ranch Access Project
Trail clearing rewards a mulcher over a dozer. A blade would have torn up the trail surface and left windrows of brush to deal with; the Weiler M860A instead ground the cedar and brush in place, turning the overgrowth into a mulch layer that protects the trail bed and slows the brush from coming back. We cleared each trail wide enough for a truck or UTV with comfortable margin, so seasonal growth does not close them up again after one spring.
With access restored, we turned to the rest of the 5 acres and selectively removed cedar across the property. Cedar steals water and light from everything around it; taking it out lets the oaks and native grasses take the ground back. The trails now connect open, healthy acreage instead of tunneling through brush.

Llano is granite country, and land here punishes equipment that fights it. Mulching is the right approach: the machine works on top of the ground instead of digging into it, there are no burn piles waiting on a county burn ban to lift, and nothing gets hauled off the property. What was standing cedar in the morning is ground cover by the afternoon. The full project ran $8,000 to $9,000 on our transparent day rate pricing, two days on site. If your place has trails you have lost to cedar and brush, this is one of the highest value clearing jobs there is: a couple of days of work buys back access to land you already own.
Frequently asked questions
What is trail clearing?
Trail clearing reopens and widens the paths that let you actually use your land: ranch roads, riding trails, access to back acreage and fence lines. On this Llano project the old trails had grown completely shut with cedar and brush. We mulch the overgrowth in place rather than blading it off, which keeps the trail surface intact and leaves a ground cover layer that slows regrowth.
How wide should a cleared trail be?
Wide enough for how you use it, plus margin for regrowth. We clear trails to comfortable truck and UTV width so one season of growth does not close them again. Widening past the original path is most of the value: a trail cut too narrow is a trail you will be clearing again in two years.
How much does trail clearing cost in Llano, TX?
This project, clearing and widening a full trail network plus selective cedar removal across 5 acres, ran $8,000 to $9,000 over two days on our transparent day rate pricing. Cost scales with trail length, how badly overgrown they are, and how much of the surrounding property gets the selective treatment. Send us photos and we will give you a real number.
Why remove cedar from a Hill Country property?
Cedar crowds out oaks and native grasses, drinks a disproportionate share of the water, and closes off land a little more every year. Selective cedar removal keeps the trees you want and returns the water, light, and views to the rest of the property. On this project the difference between the overgrown side and the cleared side was night and day by the second afternoon.
