Pond Construction in Elgin, Texas

Elgin made bricks for a century because this clay is that good, and the same dirt that fired the bricks holds our ponds. Two documented builds here: a third acre pond in five days and a one day expansion.

Brick Clay Makes Pond Country

The blackland under Elgin is famous for exactly one property: it is nearly waterproof when compacted. Brickmakers built a town on that fact. We build ponds on it.

THE GIFT

Clay That Seals Itself

Elgin blackland digs clean, compacts tight, and seals with no additives on most sites, which is why our third acre build here needed nothing but good method: core trench, lifts, spillway, done in five days.

If Central Texas has an easy button for ponds, it is buried about two feet under Elgin.

THE CATCH

Heavy Dirt, Wet Weather

The same clay that seals also gums machines when soaked, so Elgin builds schedule around ground moisture: dry spells dig fastest, and a build quoted at five days in August can take longer in a wet March.

We watch the forecast and tell you the honest window rather than parking machines in mud on your dime.

The Build, Step by Step

The brick capital sits on pond-perfect clay. Here is exactly how an Elgin build runs, from photos on your phone to water in the ground.

1

The call

The first step costs nothing: photos, a rough size, your location. We come back same day with a range from the published list, and the site walk gets scheduled only if that range makes sense to you.

2

The site walk

An Elgin site walk is the easiest geology lesson we teach: the same clay that made this the brick capital of the Southwest makes some of the best pond ground in Texas. We find the draw, confirm the clay runs as deep as Elgin clay usually does, and read the watershed. The conversation moves quickly to the good questions, size, depth, and dam line, because the seal here mostly takes care of itself.

3

The quote

We put the whole build on paper in machine days, dig, dam, and spillway, with rock or liner contingencies called out up front where you can see them. The number you sign is the number you pay.

4

Mobilization

Once the quote is signed we get you on the calendar, typically a few weeks out. The machines arrive together, stage near the site, and stay until the job is finished, no disappearing mid-build.

5

Build days

Count on two to five working days of iron time for a typical pond. Every build follows the same discipline: saved topsoil, a real core trench, a dam raised in compacted lifts, and slopes cut so they can be mowed, not just admired.

6

The walkthrough

Last step: a slow lap around the pond together. You check the dam, the spillway cut, the slope finish, and the dressed topsoil against the quote. We load the machines only when you are satisfied.

7

The wait for water

Blackland prairie sheds rain in sheets, and Elgin catches a healthy 35 inches a year of it. A pond sized to its draw fills on one wet season, sometimes on two big storms. Grass the dam immediately, blackland gullies fast when it is bare, watch the spillway work, and expect water sooner than the Hill Country folks would believe.

2026 Pond Price List

Published, not hidden behind a form. Prices and build times are based on 6 feet of depth at center with a 4:1 bank.

Pond Size Starting Price at 6 ft depth, 4:1 bank Build Time
1/4 acre from $12,300 2 to 3 days
1/2 acre from $19,200 3 to 4 days
3/4 acre from $23,300 4 to 5 days
1 acre from $27,000 5 to 6 days
1 1/4 acre from $30,400 6 to 7 days
1 1/2 acre from $33,800 7 to 8 days
1 3/4 acre from $36,800 8 to 9 days
2 acre from $39,500 9 to 10 days

Elgin builds run the published list about as reliably as anywhere we work, and both documented local builds priced from it. The scheduling variable is moisture, not money: this clay prefers to be dug dry.

Size it, tell us what to do with the dirt, then draw the pond right on a photo of your land. Your estimate comes back by email, along with a preview of the finished water.

What You Are Paying For, Line by Line

The quote has two halves: what every build includes, and the site-specific items we flag before work starts.

INCLUDED IN EVERY BUILD

The Whole Pond

One price, one finished pond: siting matched to the water the land actually sheds, staking, saved topsoil, core trench, a dam packed up in lifts, a proper spillway, slopes you can mow, and banks dressed to grass. Machine transport and the walkthrough are never extras.

QUOTED SEPARATELY WHEN NEEDED

The Site Variables

Around Elgin the variables list runs short. Rock hammer time essentially never appears, and bentonite almost never, because the clay seals itself. What does come up: clearing at published day rates when the site starts in post oak and yaupon, and haul-off in the rare case the spoil cannot be shaped into the property. The quote you see is usually the clean base price.

Two Local Builds, Two Different Jobs

The five day new build

The third acre build photographed above ran the full playbook: strip, core, lifts, spillway, finish. Five days because a third acre moves more dirt than a quarter, and because we compact this clay properly instead of pushing it up loose, which is the difference between an Elgin pond that holds for decades and the leaky tanks this county is also full of.

The one day expansion

The expansion job proves the other economics: the dam bones were good, so one day of excavator work at the water line added real capacity for a fraction of a new build. If you own an old tank around Elgin, this is usually the best money on the ranch, and we quote it on equipment day rates after looking at the dam.

Sausage capital, brick soil, pond math

Elgin acreage is going fast to Austin buyers who want country inside a half hour of town, and the tracts along 290 and 95 carry the best pond dirt in the corridor. A pond is the improvement that shows up in the appraisal and the sunset photo, and on this clay it is also the cheapest one per year of service life you can buy.

An Elgin Pond, From First Rain to Fifth Year

Clay this good is an unfair advantage

Elgin sits on deep plastic clay that rolls into a ribbon in your hand, the exact material pond engineers pray for. It packs into a core trench like it was born for it and seals a basin without additives. Our job here is mostly craft, compaction in proper lifts, honest slopes, a real spillway, because the material itself is the best in the region.

Fast filling, fast greening

Blackland sheds storms in sheets, so an Elgin pond sized to its watershed fills quickly, and the same fertility that grows brick clay grows grass and forage. The first year here does what takes three years west of Austin: full pool, green banks, and a food chain ready for bass. It is satisfying country to build in.

Depth still wins August

Even with the seal handled, the summer sun takes its toll on shallow water. Eight feet or more at center keeps the water cool and clear, and on blackland it also keeps the edges firm, deep centers mean smaller warm shallows, which means fewer weeds and less mud. Depth is cheap insurance in easy digging.

Mind the shrink-swell

The one habit Elgin clay has: it swells wet and shrinks dry, and a dam of it wants steady moisture. Grass cover shades and holds that moisture, which is one more reason seeding is the first job after the build, and why we dress the dam in saved topsoil. A grassed Elgin dam settles into permanence within a year.

From brush lot to headquarters pond

Plenty of Elgin sites start as post oak and yaupon thicket. We clear them as the Elgin clearing crew we already are, grubbed clean so nothing resprouts through your new banks, keeper oaks protected, topsoil saved and dressed back over the finished grade, ready for grass the same month.

More Than a Hole That Holds Water

Most clients add at least one of these. Planned during the build, they cost less and land better than bolting them on a year later.

FINISH

Seeding & Erosion Control

Blackland gullies faster than any soil we work when it sits bare on a slope, so the dam is seeded and matted before the machines leave the county. One growing season later it mows like lawn and holds like armor.

WATER QUALITY

Aeration & Fountains

Elgin’s fertile water grows algae as happily as it grows everything else. A bottom diffuser keeps oxygen up and blooms down without chemicals, and a fountain adds the finishing touch on a pond you see from the kitchen window.

ACCESS

Docks

Plan the dock during the dig and we shape the shelf and set the grade while the basin is dry. Blackland banks firm up beautifully, and a dock planned early sits level over honest depth for decades.

THE PAYOFF

Fish Stocking

Stock forage first and bass a season later, and fertile Elgin water does the rest, this is some of the fastest fish-growing country in Central Texas. Three patient years builds an evening fishery you will never share with a crowd.

From Our Clients

★★★★★

Hiring them to clear a piece of land on which we eventually want to build our future home was one of the best decisions I have made. First and foremost, the quality of their work is excellent. Second, these guys do not skimp.

Charles Schroeder, Google review

★★★★★

A great investment for our property. Showed up exactly when Preston said he would, worked hard all day long without a break with a beast of a machine. He had a very good understanding of what I wanted to do, and did it. The results are fantastic.

Karl Wendler, Google review

★★★★★

These guys are great! We booked a date and they showed up on time and went straight to work. Taylor, the owner, answered all of my text messages promptly. I have five acres of very dense elm and oak trees.

Words You Will Hear on the Site Walk

Dirt crews talk in shorthand. These are the six terms that matter most on a pond build.

Borrow area

Where the dam dirt comes from. On a well designed pond it is the basin itself, so every yard dug does double duty.

Acre-foot

One acre of water a foot deep, about 326,000 gallons. The unit that decides whether a stock pond needs a state permit.

Topsoil strip

Saving the living top layer before the dig and dressing it back over the banks after, so grass takes the first season.

Plastic clay

Clay that rolls into a ribbon in your hand. Elgin is famous for it, it built the bricks, and it seals our ponds.

Stock tank

Texan for a working pond built to water cattle. Usually smaller, always practical, and built with the same dam discipline.

Core trench

A keyway cut below grade under the dam and packed with clay, so water cannot travel beneath the structure.

Elgin Pond Construction FAQs

Have you built ponds in Elgin?

Two documented ones on this page: a third acre new build in five days and a one day expansion. Both photographed, both priced from the published list.

Why is Elgin clay so good for ponds?

It is the same tight blackland that supplied Elgin brick plants for a century: fine, dense, and nearly waterproof when compacted in lifts. Most sites here seal with method alone, no additives.

What does a pond cost in Elgin?

The published list, run straight: quarter acre from $12,300, third acre like our documented build sits between list rows, and the calculator above interpolates your exact size and depth.

Should I expand my old tank or dig new?

If the dam is sound, expand: our documented one day expansion added real water for a fraction of new build cost. We look at the old dam first and quote on equipment day rates.

When is the best time to build here?

Dry ground. This clay digs beautifully in a dry spell and gums up wet, so summer and fall builds run fastest, and we schedule honestly around the forecast.

Clearing and pond together?

Yes, one mobilization, and our Elgin credentials run deep: this is our most documented town on the clearing side too, with three project write ups minutes from any tract.
