Out here the pond site picks itself: the draw that already carries storm water, where decades of runoff have deposited what little soil exists. Fight that logic and you are building a swimming pool without the concrete. Follow it, and the limestone that makes this country hard also makes the runoff fast, so a well placed pond catches water off every rain that makes the creeks run.
A wide shallow pond in Dripping Springs is an evaporation pan. The sun will take several feet off it in a bad summer, and shallow water goes green besides. We would rather build you a half acre at ten feet than an acre at five, and the calculator above shows the dirt cost of both so you can see the trade honestly.
A lot of Dripping Springs tracts touch Onion Creek tributaries or other mapped drainages, and Hays County pays attention to them. Most ranch pond sites clear the rules fine, but we verify the floodplain lines on the walk, because relocating a pond on paper costs nothing and relocating one in dirt costs everything.
The honest truth about ponds between Dripping Springs and the Devil’s Backbone is that the rock decides. Karst limestone can carry water away through fractures you will never see, which is why the sealing plan, clay work, bentonite, or a liner, is settled during design instead of improvised after the pond disappoints. A sealed pond out here is an asset for decades. An unsealed one is a seasonal puddle.
Dripping Springs averages a bit over 30 inches of rain, delivered mostly in spring and fall bursts with long quiet gaps between. A pond matched to its watershed uses those bursts well, and one built too large waits years to look right. We would rather build the three quarter acre pond that rides full than the two acre one that never stops apologizing.
Summer will lift several feet of water off open Hill Country ponds, and thin soil over rock radiates heat besides. Depth is the whole defense: eight feet or more at center holds cool water for fish, keeps the pond honest through August, and denies sunlight to the weeds that claim warm shallows. Wide and shallow is a spring photograph and a summer regret.
Once we load out, grass the dam before the first serious rain, every time. Give the pond a few months of holding water, then stock in food chain order: minnows and bluegill first, largemouth a season later. That sequence is what turns a new basin into a fishery instead of a bass diet plan.
Most pond sites out here share ground with live oaks that make the property, and cedar that chokes it. As a Dripping Springs clearing crew first, we grub and mulch the cedar clean, stay off the oak root zones, and leave the whole site graded and dressed instead of scarred. The pond should look like it belongs to the land, not like it happened to it.

Deep, sealed ponds out here stratify in summer. A bottom diffuser turns the whole column over, keeps oxygen where the fish live, and holds algae in check without chemicals. Fountains do the same work in visible style, and Dripping Springs evenings deserve one.
Dock plans belong in the dig. While the basin is dry we set a shelf at the right depth and grade the approach, so the fixed or floating dock that follows sits level and lasts. Retrofitting a dock onto a full pond costs more and fits worse.
Stocking follows the order the biology wants: forage fish establish first, bass arrive the next season to find the pantry full. Done right, a Dripping Springs pond gives you the evening topwater bite without the drive to Canyon Lake.

Deeper than you think: 8 feet minimum, 10 when the site allows. Evaporation out here takes several feet a year, and depth is the only defense that does not need electricity.
A properly bedded liner under a foot of soil cover is a decades solution, and in fractured limestone it is often the only one. We quote it as a materials line item so you can weigh it against bentonite or moving the site.
